On the 6th of February, 2020 it was the first Geology Club meeting!!!
Five students came and I showed them and Prof. Cutler our equipment which include thin section machine and multiple lapidary units for cutting, grinding and polishing.
Everyone is excited about future projects and fieldtrips!

One of my experiment that I was thinking for a long time today was pretty much successful.
I was able to engrave a rock using our department laser.
The main thing is to polish the surface (but not to a mirror condition otherwise the laser will be damaged!) and sustain the same thickness of the rock.

I did not expect letters to be in so contrast with the background!

MC Geoscience Laboratory

Welcome to Montgomery College Geoscience Lab!

This semester, Spring 2020, started with exciting news: we got a Geology Club and plenty of students are interested to start the club and share their passion for rocks, mineral and earth sciences!
The Geology Club meeting will be held in SC414 from 11:45am to 1:45pm on Thursdays starting 6th of February! Interested students are welcome!
The first meeting on the 6th of February will be held in SC405

Just a small glimpse of what can be done in our Geology Lab where we got some cutting, grinding and polishing equipment. This lazurite cabochon for a ring was made entirely in our lab! A bezel can be purchased elsewhere.
During grinding the red inclusion of probably microcline revealed heart-like shape perfectly just right in the middle! What a wonderful surprise!

Thanks and regards,
Viga
